Breese and Seckel

I’m looking for a little help from Clocks Magazine.

I have a precision pendulum clock with a German name on the dial but an English movement inside. The movement is marked ‘J Breese No 896’. The clock is also dated: ‘1852’.

The clock was delivered to ‘Seckel & Co’ in Emden, a town with a harbour to the North Sea. The Seckel family is known for chronometers (Rotterdam and Hamburg).

Meanwhile I know that Mr Breese was an established mathematician and clockmaker—and the first secretary of the bhi. Certainly a remarkable man.

The movement is remarkable, too. But I guess that there could be some little alterations. Therefore I would like to know if there are other movements or clocks by Mr Breese to compare the anchor, the pendulum etc. Did he make only movements for other clockmakers?or whole clocks?

I would be grateful for any information or contact.
