Matting dial centresReplicating original matting on a dial centre after replacing dial feet can be tricky.I have tried a number of ways of doing this but find the most convincing method is by using old hacksaw blades. My method is to carefully snap 3in to 4in from both ends of three old hacksaw blades. Do this using a piece of rag as fragments can fly off in a vicious manner. The edges of the teeth need to be ground to leave a series of pyramidal points. After lightly lock-nutting six pieces of blade together the matting tool is ready to use. By repeated tapping with a small hammer in a vertical and horizontal axis, convincing matting can be produced. With further treatment using a wire brush, suitable ageing will complete the effect.
