The importance of a storyboard

The Australian Antiquarian Horological Society (Melbourne) regularly conducts excellent clock repair and restoration workshops. Recently Carl Lutz, a master restorer, wood carver and French polisher was the presenter.

Carl stressed the importance of returning screws, hinges etc to the exact position from which they were removed. His suggestion was to screw the parts on to a scrap of timber to construct a storyboard.

The attached photograph shows the various components of a Gledhill-Brook Time Recorder case that I am currently restoring, screwed into place and labelled. Not only does the storyboard ensure that screws go back in the original hole but the notes are a great help if the restoration process is drawn out and re-assembly is delayed.
